Deformed shank nails are those that have helical shanks, resembling a screw, or that have shanks covered by rings anrooves. Deformed shanks are used in the hope of increasing the resistance of the nail to being pulled out, compared to plain shank nails.
Lawrence Soltis1 reports that the withdrawal resistance of ring shank nails is about 40% greater than that of common nails.
