There is no Urease in normal human stomach. However, the Helicobacter Pylori produces Urease, which can be hydrolyzed into Ammonia and Carbon dioxide. If a patient who takes the 13C labeled Urea suffers from Hp infection, the Urea will be hydrolyzed in his stomach into NH4 and CO2, then the 13CO2 will enter the blood and will be exhaled through the lungs. As a result, the proportion of 13C in exhaled air will increase. The 13C/12C ratio can be measured by an infrared spectrometer (IR-force 200/300) or a sensitive mass spectrometer; this is how we use the 13C Urea breath test to diagnose Hp infection.
