WESSA founded in 1926, is the South Africa's oldest and largest non-governmental membership-based organization. The Society maintains a watchful eye on the South African environment through its extensive network of Regional offices, Branches, Friends Groups and Environmental Youth Clubs. WESSA's vision is to strengthen its effectiveness as an independent, NGO, working to achieve a South Africa which is wisely managed by all to ensure long-term environmental sustainability. Its mission is to promote public participation in caring for the Earth. Its aim is conserve the Earth's vitality and diversity by: promoting sound environmental values and lifestyles, Integrating conservation and development, Encouraging and generating individual and community action, Securing the protection and wise use of natural resources, Acting as an environmental watchdog, Promoting and participating in environmental education.
