SIRDC was established in February 1993 in terms of the Research Act of 1986 for the purpose of providing wide ranging research and development services (R&D) to industry and different community groups as well as individuals. The Research and Development (R&D) activities are carried out in the seven specialized constituent Research institutes, which serves as the technical operational organs of SIRDC. The research staff, which comprises of scientist and engineers in each institute, reports directly to the Institute Directors.
