BEN, a section 21-company registration no 200/030873/08 promotes the use of the bicycle to address low-cost transport and improve health. The BEN Tourism project aims to implement a Community-based Bicycle Tourism programme to address sustainable job creation through training, development and support to previously disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. BEN was established in February 2002 and working together with the South African National Department of Transport (DoT), the Cape Provincial DoT and many overseas donor agencies, the project facilitates the transportation of thousands of bicycles from Europe, Great Britain and the United States to South Africa. Bicycle workshop projects are then established and the local community empowered, which can be further complemented by donations of bikes from within South Africa. To ensure the success of the project, BEN has established close ties with the Pedal Power Association and Foundation in Cape Town, ITDP in New York, Afribike Nederland in Amsterdam, I-ce in Utrecht and Re-Cycle in London. In addition, BEN is focussed on the ongoing partnership with the Shova Kalula project of the South African National of Transport (NDoT), Rotary clubs and the Cape Argus Cycle Tour Trust. BEN is a national program based in Cape Town.
