BBDC was created in 1993. It is incorporated as a non-profit NGO and registered with the Department of Justice of Lesotho. The Centre aims to impart relevant skills to full and short term students, and carry out research and development into energy efficient and appropriate technology, and to aid in the general development of the locality. The vision of the Centre is financial self-sustainability through program, product and service excellence, and through optimization of local self-reliance. The offers one-week short courses in: Solar Technology, Permaculture, Rainwater Harvesting and Rehabilitation, Homestead Construction Technology, Leadership and Democratization for local Government and Rural Development. The Centre has been chosen by the Institute for International Energy Conservation to act as an Eco-Homes Advisor for Lesotho.
